With the beginning
of Daylight Savings Time (DST) coming early this year and starting at 2
am Sunday, March 11th, here are a few safety related tips from the
Intermountain Injury Prevention Coalition for you to consider doing
around the your home and work place at the same time.
1. Before you leave work at the end
of this week, change your office area clocks forward one hour (Spring =
Forward). That way when you come into work on Monday morning you
won’t arrive an hour late.
2.
Computers, VCRs and some other electronic equipment have been
programmed during manufacturing to automatically change the equipment’s
time when DST arrives. With the date change for DST this year
that will not happen, at least not until the normal date for DST
arrives. If you or your workplace has added an update to correct
the date change to your computer, hopefully it will change it as it has
in the past. If not, you have two choices, one is to
manually change the time on your electronic equipment, or two, leave it
alone until it changes by itself as it normally would in April.
If you do change the time manually, remember that when the old date for
DST arrives in April your electronic equipment may change the time
again, so you will then have to change it back. Hopefully this is
the least of the problem with your equipment and like us you really
don’t care about the time in the first place.
3.
Before you retire on Saturday night March 10th, change all of your
household clocks, timers, watches, alarms, radios, ovens, automatic
sprinklers and VCRs forward one hour. Don’t forget your automobile
clocks as well. If your VCR is still blinking “12:00” you probably
don’t need to bother changing that!
4.
This weekend and next week are also ideal times to do “safety
maintenance:
a. Change the batteries in your
smoke, CO and other battery-operated detectors. Carefully and properly
dispose of used batteries.
b.
Check the seals and serviceability of household, vehicle and office
fire extinguishers. Replace as necessary and review operating
procedures with family members.
c.
Update your personal/family emergency plans and review them with family
members. Update important phone numbers and points of contact,
especially if you recently moved.
d.
Rotate and replace perishable items out of your 72-hour emergency kits.
Change the batteries in your portable radio(s) and flashlights; again
carefully and properly dispose of the used batteries. Also check the
emergency rations/water and other safety items (chains, blankets) in
your vehicle(s). If you don’t have a 72-hour kit, now would be a good
time to create/buy one. Visit:
http://www.redcross.org/disaster/safety/fdsk.pdf, for a sample.
e.
With warm/hot weather approaching (really it will), consider servicing
your vehicles, paying special attention to cooling/heating systems,
brakes and tires.
f.
Change out furnace/air conditioning filters if you don’t already do
this monthly. Prepare swamp coolers for the summer weather.
Finally, although not required but generally considered a good safety
tip, now is a good time to do something special for/with your
significant other, especially if you haven’t done anything since last
Fall’s daylight savings reminder!
“Safety doesn't just happen…you have to practice it”.
